Dear President, teachers, staffs and fellow students,
I would like to send my best wishes to everyone in the Open University of Hong Kong who celebrating Chinese New Year.
Today is New Year's Day, it is the great day for all of us to celebrate the Chinese New Year. This is the day for us to have a family reunion within whole Chinese Year. No matter where you are, people would try their best to travel back to their hometown in order to enjoy their family time. At the same time, I believe all of you have noticed that the Student Affair Office had organised some celebration activities in our campus namely “Happy Chinese New Year 2018”. Our president, Professor Yuk-Shan Wong, had distributed some pocket money, wrote some lucky messages on the red banners and took photos with some of our schoolmates. I hope all of us could feel this warmly festive atmosphere of the Chinese New Year within this big family of Open University.
In the past year alone, various activities were taken places in our campus organised by the Students’ Union and its affiliated societies. These kinds of activities for students to participate in, enriched our university life and filled the campus with vigour and joy. However, the student union has played an indispensable role among these activities. It is important for us to pass on the spirit and meaning behind our school motto “公誠毅樸,開明進取” from generation to generation to build our university.
In recent years, the social environment has changed rapidly. The challenges of student movement have been constantly increasing. Students may not feel faithful and confidence for the future of society. Some of the students will no longer run for the Executive Committee of the Students’ Union in their institution, the Open University has no exception. I understand that students seem to have different considerations for whether running for the Students’ Union. However, I believe they still show their enthusiasm and hope for the university policy and the Social problems in the Hong Kong society. Although some opinions may consider the current social environment very grim and forbidding, I believe there are still many things that we, as members of the university, care about and can do best to all our teachers and students.
The Eleventh Executive Committee and the Fourth Editorial Board of the Open University of Hong Kong Students’ Union are currently vacant due to the absence of a proposed cabinet. Earlier, the Election Board of the Union Council had released the nomination period again. I hereby call on all students and academic or administrative staff who are concerned about our campus and our society to pray for this challenging and atypical situation. I would even encourage you and the prospective candidates to run for the upcoming election.
Finally, on behalf of the whole Union Council, I once again blessed all of you and your family, wherever you are, a very happy and healthy New Year.
Yours faithfully,
Martin Ho
Chairman of the Union Council, OUHKSU
